Looking back, I have no idea how I became a journalist. It could have turned out very differently. At one point I wanted to be an elevator boy but felt that the job would have too many ups and downs. Like the world's economies.

I am not a great believer in conspiracy theories. They are fun, of course, and conspiracies do indeed occur. But I believe that cock-up and coincidence explain a far greater proportion of world events.

In the past, I've often been rude in articles and blog posts about the poor customer service offered by Deutsche Telekom. I usually felt a bit guilty afterwards — at least until my next encounter with the firm.
