Wise Words: thriller

Michael Jackson: Tragic end. Photo: Sony-BMG

Michael Jackson, the legendary "King of Pop", died on Thursday, 25 June. It was a tragic end to a thrilling life of music, dance moves and mysterious rumours. His best-selling album was called Thriller, and he had a thriller of a life. But when any good thriller ends, we're left with a feeling of emptiness. No one will be able to fill his dancing shoes.

When Thriller was released in 1982, I was 18. I bought his album and went to great lengths to record the full 13-minute ground-breaking video off the television. My daughter was 15 when the same album was re-released on its 25th anniversary last year. She downloaded it off the internet (songs and video in one) — and we were both thrilled by the music and the sheer brilliance of Jackson's dance moves. There aren't many people whose talents can transcend generations — and enjoy 25 years of success. Jackson will be sadly missed, but his music continues to be played.

Experience Michael Jackson on YouTube.

Read some of the tributes to Jackson that are pouring in from around the world for an idea of the impact he had on people. Normally, such tributes focus on the postive side of someone's life. Not so with Jackson. His controversial way of life didn't thrill everyone.

"The world has lost one of the greats, but his music will live on forever!"
Madonna

“He has been an inspiration throughout my entire life and I am devastated that he is gone."
Cher

"Never has one soared so high and yet dived so low."
British foreign minister David Miliband on Twitter.

"I hope that when people reflect on his death that they don't just focus only on his last years."
Germany's economic minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, who was speaking at the Adlon Hotel where Jackson showed his baby to fans in 2002 by hanging him out of a top-floor window.

I always found that Michael Jackson looked very pale, when I sah him on a picture, I thought he looked as if he was ill, but when he sang, this impression disappeared and was replaced by an articifial world created by his special voice.

Hi Beate
You're right. He did have a magical voice.
