"Hein pulls mayonnaise ad because it is _________ ."

a) unhealthy
b)
offensive
c) too violent

The correct answer is "offensive".

Wise Words: offensive
If something is offensive, then people feel offended or hurt by it.
offensive = anstößig

A mayonnaise advertisement that shows two men kissing has been pulled from television after 200 viewers complained about it. Heinz, the company that makes the New York Deli Mayo in the advertisement, has apologized for any offence caused. The 200 viewers felt that the ad was inappropriate and unsuitable for children to see. The ad won't be shown on TV any more, but there's always YouTube!

The ad is not great, but I'm surprised that anyone complained about it. When I first saw it, I thought the cook was just a symbol of how the "mum" feels when she uses the Heinz mayonnaise — like a New York Deli Chef. Not gay at all.

But isn't pulling the ad more offensive to gays than letting it run? Especially as only 200 people complained. Who are they to decide what the rest of us get to watch, or not?

By the way, the ad wasn't even shown when children could be expected to be watching TV. Because of new rules from Ofcom (Office of Communications), the organization that monitors the media in the UK, ads for products high in fat, salt and sugar cannot be advertised during children's programmes. That would include mayonnaise.

What do you think? Is this ad offensive?

Your comments
At first, I was a bit puzzled but it has nothing to do with offence. I would say to all people - be more liberal and respectful about other people and their kind of life.

"Ain't you forgettin' somethin'?" Haha... the New York macho mom and her 'husband'... well I think it is weird and definitely gay and funny. However personally, I can't see a reason why I should find the ad offensive, though I know there are lots of gay-bashers out there, the 'values people', who consider the traditional family an endangered species. This is going overboard. Can't they take a joke?
