Wise Words: death grip and other grips

A few hours after the new iPhone was released on 25 June, buyers were complaining about a weak Wi-Fi signal, especially when it was held in the left hand.  What was Apple’s response? They blamed the users for using the wrong grip.

"If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band."

The wrong kind of grip became jokingly known as the “death grip”, which is normally used in James Bond movies or wrestling matches. Motorola quickly came up with a new full-page advert for their own smartphone in The New York Times, that mocked the Apple problem and promised users they could hold the phone “any way you like”.

Is Apple coming to grips with the problem? It's trying to: the company recently posted five new job listings for antenna engineers.

I'd like to add one more expression with "grip" to this post: get a grip! I'm not talking to Apple here, but the lawyers who are hoping to file a class-action lawsuit against Apple. Get a grip, guys — how about focusing your talents against BP instead? There's so much more at stake there.

The "death grip saga" is not as gripping as the Apple critics would like to have us believe.
