  • The Lay of the Land

Recently, at a local flower shop, I was chatting with the florist as she arranged a few flowers for my son Patrick’s Kindergarten teachers. Three years of German pre-school had flown by and here I was, buying a small thank you gift for Patrick’s last day. I casually mentioned that I was looking forward to enjoying the four years at the new neighborhood elementary school.

“Geniessen ist jetzt vorbei!” the florist matter-of-factly stated. The fun was over. Pulling my heart out of my proverbial trouser pocket that it had slid into, I said “Hmm…”, thanked her for the flowers and paid. I really was at a loss for words. Where had the fun gone? Who had taken it out of learning and not told me about it?

If enjoyment was taken out of the equation during the first years of formal education, how do we manage to get our business English students to enjoy themselves during a lesson?
