"Productivity in the 21st century: Boosting multicultural virtual teams" was the title of a fascinating presentation given by Maria Jicheva at the recent SIETAR (Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research) Congress in Krakow.
"We learn much better when we have a positive mindset."
This has important implications for those of us involved in learning and business. There is now concrete proof of something that good teachers have always known: we learn much better when we have a positive mindset. For those involved in managing change, it is vital to recognize that people are more prepared to change their behaviour if the pleasure rather than pain centres of the brain are activated.
Another researcher who has been looking into this field is Joachim Bauer. His book Prinzip Menschlichkeit is a great introduction to the topic.
Professor Bauer is one of the speakers at a symposium in Munich on 25 November organized by the Bundesverband Mediation on the topic of conflict and culture. Although the focus is on organizational culture, I am optimistic that it will also provide insights valuable to those of us primarily interested in national cultures.
