Anordnung und Sprache sind für ein Bewerbungsschreiben auf Englisch nicht weniger wichtig als dessen Inhalt. Wie es aussehen kann, zeigt unser Beispiel.

Layout and language play an important role in job applications. Here's a typical example of a cover letter.

In British cover letters, applicants tend to write a subject line (Re:...) before the greeting.

The first paragraph shows clearly that the letter is a job application — and gives exact details about the position the person is applying for.

The second paragraph gives the company an overview of the applicant's work experience, shows how they are relevant to the position and gives only the most pertinent academic details.

The final paragraphs end the letter in a polite and positive way by showing interest and asking to be contacted. Notice how the applicant signs off with "Yours faithfully". If you know the name of the person to whom you are writing, use "Yours sincerely".

Have you given your cover letter a similar structure?

Re: Your advertisement in The Guardian reference LB/ 98 -CEM

15 September 2010

Dear Sir or Madam

In response to your advertisement in The Guardian for a Foreign Exchange Manager, I am submitting my application for your consideration.

I am confident that I can fulfil your requirements in foreign exchange contracts, international payment and letters of credit, as I am currently employed in the foreign exchange department at First German Bank in Berlin. After earning my degree in finance from the Humboldt University — where I graduated in the top third of my class — I participated in an exchange programme at the London School of Economics. I have near-native proficiency in written and spoken English, and am also fluent in French. I also have a working knowledge of Spanish and Italian.

My experience in banking operations is supplemented by excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail. I work well alone as well as within a team and enjoy interacting with customers.

Should you be interested in contacting me for an interview, I would be happy to discuss any further details with you at that time.

Yours faithfully

Sebastian Hinkel

Encl.
