- The former government, led by the Social Democrats, wanted the Czech Republic to join the euro in 2007. The current centre-right government dropped the plan, saying 2012 is more realistic.
- The Czech Republic is one of the most stable and wealthy post-communist states of central and eastern Europe. It was the first former member of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (an economic organization of communist states) to be recognized by the World Bank as a “developed country” (in 2006).
