EmphasisTo emphasize how often something happens, some adverbs normally placed in mid-position can be put at the end or beginning of a clause:
sometimes | occasionally | often | frequently | regularly | normally | generally | usually
- Jack and I play golf together occasionally.
- Sometimes, I wish I didn’t have to work here.
Formal styleIn formal style and for special emphasis, adverbs with a negative or restrictive meaning can be put at the beginning of a sentence, followed by the auxiliary verb and the subject:
- At no time did he realize what he had done.
- Never would they forget her kindness.
- Not once did he apologize.
