Here's a short overview of sentence constructions with "
to + infinitive" and "
-ing"
forms.
Some verbs are followed by to + infinitive.
- She wants to take a break.
Some verbs are followed by an "-ing" form.
- I feel like taking a break.
Some verbs can be followed by either “to + infinitive” or by an "–ing" form.
- He started working for Jenkins and Sons in 1998.
- He started to work for Jenkins and Sons in 1998.
Sometimes, there is a difference in meaning between the two forms:
-
I remember telling him about the problem.
- I must remember to tell him about the problem.
The last rule is the one we will look at more closely here online. Our exercise looks at four common verbs that can take both forms, but which also have a change in meaning.
