Frank Bascombe is a real estate agent in New Jersey. In his early 60s, he owns his own business and employs a young colleague, a Tibetan immigrant who has changed his name to Mike Mahoney. Novelist Richard Ford is a former real estate agent, and he clearly knows the business well. If you read this funny and touching novel, you will learn a great deal of useful vocabulary. However, The Lay of the Land is primarily a literary novel, and its style will prove challenging for all but advanced learners of English. You might want to have the German version, Die Lage des Landes (Berlin Verlag), nearby to check your understanding.
