In this test, we focus on the language of working conditions. In particular, we look at vocabulary that is used to talk about how the economic recession is affecting UK government policy on working practices.

1. An early
of the recession in the UK may be the plan to extend flexible working practices.
2. The Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, Peter Mandelson, recently announced that he wanted to
plans for flexible working reforms.
3. This seems to be
to the traditional argument that flexible working is a cost to business.
4. Mandelson is trying to
the level of regulation on small and medium-sized businesses.
5. The government clearly wants to help businesses avoid
jobs in the recession.
6. In a recession, reducing hours for some employees makes better business
.
7. Some employers clearly see the link between flexible working and better employee
 and higher productivity.
8. In any case, if employees do
the right for further flexible hours, the employer will decide if it is possible or not. So, it does not have to lead to any extra costs.
9. However,
in recent surveys have said that they are worried about the negative effect that flexible working hours could have on their careers.
10. It is clear that the argument as to whether more flexible working practices are a business
or a business cost will continue for some time to come.
