Vocabulary: Skill Up! — Your health
06.12.2011
Elisa Moolecherry: Hello and welcome to the Business Spotlight podcast for the 6th December 2011. I’m Elisa Moolecherry.
Elisa Moolecherry: When you are feeling ill, you probably just go
to your family doctor. But what happens if you are in an
English-speaking country, and you have to see a medical specialist? For
this, you’ll need to know the correct title. Let’s “skill up” on this
vocabulary now. In this exercise, you’ll hear a sentence describing a
situation or a medical condition. For treatment, you, or someone you
know, will need a specialist. At the tone, give the correct title in
English. You’ll then hear the answer, and an explanation. OK?
Brian: You go to the paediatrician, a specialist for children's diseases.
Elisa: You painted the living room and now your back hurts. Which doctor do you need?
Brian: You need an orthopaedist, a specialist for problems with bones.
Elisa: Your neighbour is expecting a baby. Which doctor does she go to?
Brian: She goes to a gynaecologist, a specialist for pregnant women and women's health matters.
Elisa: You have high blood pressure, so you want to have your heart examined. Which doctor can do that?
Brian: A cardiologist is the specialist for the heart and circulatory system.
Elisa Moolecherry: By the way, the vocabulary in this exercise comes from our Skill Up! vocabulary guide called “Your health”, available free with this issue of the magazine. We also offer a special segment on health and medicine on Business Spotlight Audio 6/2011. The CD offers more than 70 minutes of news, interviews and language exercises.
