Vocabulary: Winter sports
Elisa Moolecherry: This is Elisa Moolecherry for Business Spotlight. Welcome to our podcast for the 27th of December 2011.
It’s
winter! I can’t wait to go to the mountains — to ski, snowboard or just
play in the snow! So today, let’s go over the vocabulary for some
cold-weather fun. In this exercise, I’ll give you a definition of the
locations for winter sports, and two terms to choose from. At the tone,
you give us the correct term. You’ll then hear the answer, and an
explanation. Ready?
1. This is where you can go ice skating. Is it a “rink” or a “sledge”?
+ You go ice skating in a rink. You sit on a sledge to slide down a mountain. Americans say “sled” for this. OK, next.
2. This is where you go cross country skiing. Is it a “chute” or a “trail”?
+ You go cross-country skiing on a trail. A chute is for high-speed sleds.
Here’s another.
3. This is where you slide down a hill, for example on a sled. Is this a “slope” or a “sheet”?
+ You slide down the hill on a slope. A sheet is the playing surface for the sport of curling.
Good. And finally, let’s make sure you’re dressed correctly for the slopes.
4. You wear this to protect your head. Is it a helmet or goggles?
+ You wear a helmet to protect your head. You wear goggles to protect your eyes.
