A little good news
BRITAIN: It’s been a cool, rainy summer in many parts of Britain. Yet British
tourism is booming. Thanks to the weaker pound, many people are
choosing to take holidays at home rather than flying off to warmer
climates. At the same time, the strong euro is bringing more tourists
from continental Europe to the UK.
The online travel agency iknow-uk Ltd says it received 60 per cent more inquiries for package holidays
and other forms of travel in Britain this spring than it did last year.
Last-minute.com reports a 20 per cent increase in holiday bookings from
Europeans wanting to visit Britain. The company has also seen domestic bookings rise by 16 per cent.
“The papers are filled with gloomy stories about the credit crunch, but for our business the news is good,” says Francis Guildea, general manager of Adnams hotels in Southwald. Guildea told The Wall Street Journal: “Business is up ten per cent on last year, which means more people will be coming to the town to spend in the shops, pubs and restaurants.”
