Out of this world
GLOBAL: Can you name the planets in our solar system? What is the difference between a meteor and a comet? Improve your knowledge of the universe and learn more about the work of space researchers in 2009, the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009).
The IYA2009 opening ceremony takes place on 15 and 16 January in Paris. During the year, thousands of events across the planet aim to bring the science of outer space closer to people. The celebrations mark the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei's first astronomical observation through a telescope.
At the Cosmic Diary, more than 50 astronomers at academic institutions and space research organzations, including NASA and the European Organisation for Astronomical Research, will blog about their work and their lives. One prominent blogger is Alan Hale, co-discoverer of the Comet Hale-Bopp in 1995. Hale now heads the Earthrise Institute in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, USA.

Programmes include "From Earth to the Universe", a presentation of spectacular images from outer space; a comet-counting contest, and a campaign to raise awareness of light pollution.
Catherine Cesarsky, president of the International Astronomical Union, says: "IYA2009 will reinforce the links between science education and science careers, stimulating a long-term increase in student enrolment in the fields of science and technology."
