Show me the money!

I’m convinced that humour is an important element of language learning. We have lots of fun sections in this issue of Skill Up!, even though the topic is quite a serious one: talking about money. We start with an amusing illustration of basic, everyday money expressions (see above). If the image of our fraudster sticks in your mind, we hope the words will stick there, too.

The sections:

  • Picture This! Use illustrations to help you to visualize the meanings of words.
  • Word Bank Study key expressions and translations in our vocabulary list.
  • False Friends Use visual memory aids for tricky translations.
  • In Focus Memorize common word partnerships to become more fluent.
  • Essential Idioms Learn idiomatic language through dialogues.
  • Close Relations Focus on words and word families.
  • Small Talk Learn common idioms and expressions for socializing.
  • Your Profile Personalize our guide with your own example sentences.

We hope you enjoy our new guide and look forward to your comments.

Sehr geehrte Frau Deborah Capras,

ich vermute mal, dass ich mit 75 der " Jüngste" Abonnent bei Business Spotlight bin. Ich möchte mich
überschwenglich bei Ihnen bzw.Business Spotlight bedanken für das Herausbringen von "Skill up" . Die
jetzt erschiene Nr. 2 "Taking about money" hat mich restlos begeistert.

Alois Rund

Dear Mr Rund

Thank you for your incredibly kind comments about our Skill Up! vocabulary guide. We were very touched by your praise and appreciate the time you took to send us your feedback.

If want to download and listen to our mp3 vocabulary files, you need only buy a very simple mp3 player. Today, most mp3 players will hold more than enough files for your needs. If, however, you want to record yourself, you will probably need to buy a more expensive model. If I were you, I would go to your local electronic store and ask for a demonstration of the latest models — telling the sales person that you want to use it for recording speech as well as for listening to mp3 files.

I am a huge Apple fan. I can warmly recommend the iPod nanos and the iPod Touch. (Spotlight Verlag has no business interest in recommending Apple, this is just my personal opinion.) They are both very easy to use — particularly when you want to transfer mp3 files from your computer onto the player, or to subscribe to podcasts.

Have you also tried recording speech using your mobile phone? Most phones have this function — and many also allow you to transfer mp3 files from your computer onto them. (The iPhone is one of course, but there are many other less expensive phones that have this function, too.)

I hope you find our tips helpful.

Good luck and happy learning!

Kind regards

Deborah

Dear Deborah,

the Skill-up series ist great. I would really appreciate if you´d offer the full vocabulary as mp3-file so I could learn the vocabulary while commuting.

Maybe you could take the work in a tax advisors office as a topic some day? It's not easy to find the correct vocabulary for my job.

Kind regards

Monika

Dear Monika

Thank you for the positive feedback. You can download individual mp3 files of a selection of the words from the guides. We have also recently launched our BusinessWord app, which also includes many of the words from our guides. For more information, see: Our apps!

All the best
