At full speed?

Speed up!

In the UK, there’s a speed limit on the roads. There doesn’t seem to be one anywhere else. Everything has to happen fast — ideally at top speed. If it doesn't, we automatically feel we're wasting our time — or missing out on something more important.

Too old for what?

In many ways, I have had a lucky life. In particular, as a white British male, I have rarely experienced any overt form of negative discrimination. But at last I have become a member of a group that is often discriminated against.

Election fever

Four years ago I took three videotapes and one ballot to class. Our topic that evening was the presidential debates. Most of my students had never seen a presidential debate or an absentee ballot, so we had our work cut out for us.

The fun is over...

Three years of Kindergarten had flown by and here I was, buying flowers for my son's teachers on his last day. I told the florist I was looking forward to the four years at the new elementary school. “Geniessen ist jetzt vorbei!” she said. The fun was over?
