PROCEDURE
Preparation:In the lesson before this one, decide on a discussion topic related to economic or financial trends that interests your student. For example, the trends could refer to your student’s firm, the economy, the euro or share prices. Have your student prepare the topic of discussion at home and learn the vocabulary on pages 12–15 of Skill Up!. Copy the vocabulary onto cards, using different colours for different word classes (e.g., red for verbs, blue for nouns, etc.).
- In the lesson, ask your student to discuss the chosen topic using some of the verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs on pages 12–15.
- Now focus on the vocabulary. Lay out the verb cards and ask for the past tenses. Your student should then rank the adjectives and adverbs according to the degree of change they describe (from smallest to biggest). (See the first column on page 15.) Now rank the adjectives and adverbs based on the rate of change they describe. (See the second column on page 15.)
- Ask your student to choose various combinations of verb and adverb cards and to use them to make sentences to do with trends. Help with the grammar. Do the same exercise with the noun and adjective cards.
- When your student feels comfortable with the verb-adverb and noun-adjective collocations, ask them to present their topic again. This time, record your student,
- using either audio or video, and give language feedback.
- Assign exercise 3 on page 19 of Business Spotlight plus.
