Procedure
Lesson one (10 minutes)
- Write on the board: “The role of a mentor is to challenge, not to reinforce what you already think.”
- Discuss the quote. Now start a discussion around the following questions: “When have you served as a mentor to a colleague or friend?”, “Who has served as your mentor in business life?”
- Look up the origin of the word “mentor”. (Don’t refer to or assign the article yet.)
Lesson two (30 minutes)
- Read the definition of mentor at the beginning of the article. Turn to the interview with Eric Parsloe on page 60 and dictate the four questions to your student. Discuss the questions before reading through Parsloe’s replies on page 60.
- Briefly discuss whom your student would choose as a mentor. Turn to the third paragraph on page 61 to read about Dee Shelford’s mentor.
- Listen to Business Spotlight Audio, track 4.
- The entire article can be assigned as follow-up reading.
