Procedure
- Write on the board: “What makes for a pleasurable flight?” As the students answer this question, make a mind-map round the question using their key-word responses (e.g. “smooth take-off”, “landing”, “no crying babies”, etc.).
- The students briefly discuss the replies and share recent flying experiences.
- Give them five minutes to write why they think fat people should pay for two airplane seats. Then, give them another five minutes to write against this argument.
- The students work in pairs and discuss their pro and contra arguments.
- They then compare their arguments to those of Laila Yuile and Sondra Solovay in the article. Ask them which standpoint they found easier to defend. Now, discuss how their arguments compared to those in the article.
- Listen to track 6 of our Audio for other opinions on the subject.
