Skill Up! (pages 4–5) |
Procedure
Preparation
Download the pdf of the illustrations from pages 4 and 5 of Skill Up! for this activity. You will need one copy of each page per group of four students. Lesson
- Give half the class the page 4 picture (one between two students) and the other half the page 5 picture (also one between two). Write on the board the following three categories: “professions”, “things” (they can see in the picture) and “verbs” (to describe what the people do or are doing right now). Working in pairs, they should come up with vocabulary in the three categories for their picture. Monitor and provide assistance where necessary.
- Bring the students together into groups of four (a page-4 pair and a page-5 pair) and have them peer-teach each other the vocabulary. Write any new words on the board. Do whole-group feedback at the end to ensure all students have seen and heard all the new words.
- Turn to pages 4 and 5 of Skill Up! and allow your students time to study the vocabulary and translations.
- Now you can choose how you wish to exploit the pictures further — some suggestions for practising different skills are: do some work on the present-continuous tense; take the role of someone in the picture and write an e-mail to your friend, telling them about your day. Tell your students that there are downloadable mp3 files of selected vocabulary from Skill Up! at www.business-spotlight.de/skill-up-1
- See the copy file in Business Spotlight in the classroom for an additional role-play activity.
