Time for a quickie?

 Procedure

• Write “condom” in scrambled letters on the board (onmdco). Ask the group to unscramble the word. Discuss condom ads they have seen, as well as slang terms for condom (rubber, jimmy hat, love glove, raincoat, etc.).
• Tell your students that they are going to find out more about Durex, the global
• market leader for condoms.
• Write the following number phrases on the board: 30 women, £40 million, 40 per cent of women, 67 per cent, £642.5 million, 12 months, 33 per cent rise, 7.3 per cent, £266.9 million, 130 countries, 75 per cent of sales, just over 50 per cent, one billion, a third of the cost, just seven seconds, a turnover of £200 million.
• Give the students just four minutes to choose any five number phrases and scan the article “Into the act of sex” for the phrase contexts.
• After four minutes, the students pair up, share their findings and choose five more number phrases to work on together. As a group, discuss which facts from the article were most surprising.
