“Don’t, don’t, don’t” (pp. 38–44) |
Preparation
- Copy onto coloured cards the ten listening rules highlighted in this article.
PROCEDURE
Lesson one (90 minutes)
- Read the quote on page 39. Discuss whether or not you agree with it, then talk about the factors that prevent effective communication.
- Spread the cards out on the table and ask your student to explain how these rules might make communication more effective.
- Read the article together. At the end of each section, ask your student to summarize the rule and to give an opinion on it.
- Do a “deep listening” exercise: tell your student you will talk for a few minutes on a topic (anything at all) and your student must listen. Your student may make “lis- tening noises” but the aim is for them to be aware of what is going through their minds. At the end, discuss how deeply your student felt they had listened.your statements once through silently before reading them out loud to each other.
- Assign the video “Listening skills” at http://www.business-spotlight.de/videos/bob and ask your student to write a summary on how to become a better listener.
- Discuss your student’s video summary.
- Spread the cards out on the table again. Play track 7 of Business Spotlight Audio. Pause the CD after each rule to allow your student to comment.
