“Used to”, “be used to” and “would” are all ways of talking about habits. Practise using them correctly by doing the following exercises.

You can use “used to” + infinitive to talk about past habits and about past states:

    • She used to play tennis.
    • He used to have a beard.

You can use “would” + infinitive to talk about past habits, but not about past states. The form is often used with time expressions such as “often”, “when I was young”, etc.:

    • We would often go for a stroll in our lunch break.

“Would” + infinitive is not normally used in this sense in negative statements or in questions.
